About Us
We help women returning from incarceration to get their lives back on track through offering them a safe, healing environment, so they can focus on healing, reuniting with family and reaching self-sufficiency, while becoming powerful advocates for themselves, their families and their communities.
Angel’s Safe Home is a part of the Sisterhood Alliance for Freedom & Equality (SAFE) Housing Network, founded by A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL) and Ms. Susan Burton to replicate ANWOL’s uniquely effective gender-specific reentry and advocacy model in communities across the US and beyond.
Our Mission & Vision
Angel’s Safe Home is a safe place for formerly incarcerated women who need a home due to unfortunate life choices or situations.
Our mission is to help women get their lives back on track through offering them a safe, healing, and supportive environment where they can focus their attention on job security, sobriety, mental health progression, and everything else they need to reach self-sufficiency and to develop into leaders in the movement to end mass incarceration.
Our vision is a world where all formerly incarcerated individuals have the opportunity to succeed, no matter their background or history.
Angel’s Safe Home was founded in 2022, as a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE).
Due to the criminalization of substance use and poverty, women are the fastest growing incarcerated population. They are disproportionately people of color, overwhelmingly poor and low-income, survivors of violence and trauma, and have high rates of physical and mental illness and substance use.
Women in jails are also often primary caregivers to their young children: Nearly 80% of women in jails are mothers, and most are primary caregivers.
About 12,500 women are released from Texas prisons each year. Despite representing some 16% of all prison releases, most reentry resources are focused on men. And while some programs might accept women, they are not designed to meet their gender-specific needs.
As a result, too many women wind up back in the same unsafe environments that led to their incarceration in the first place – a cycle that is also likely to lead them back to prison.
At Angel’s Safe Home, we know that formerly incarcerated women are capable of amazing things. By providing support for women to set and pursue their own goals, we create opportunities for women to thrive.
What We Do
Formerly incarcerated women face substantial challenges including finding housing, managing their mental health and fighting social stigma. We offer wraparound services that address multiple goals and needs in a coordinated way. Our model works.
Angel’s Safe Home is newly opened and we do not yet have our first year of data. However, we are encouraged and inspired by the success of our model, which was developed by A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL). Annually, on average, more than nine out of 10 women in ANWOL’s programs meet benchmarks demonstrated to be necessary for successful reentry. (See The ANWOL Model tab.)
Our programs focus on empowering our participants to become self-sufficient, responsible and productive citizens. Through mentorship, job training, and educational opportunities, we equip them with the tools to break the cycle of recidivism and lead successful, fulfilling lives.
At Angel’s Safe Home, we believe that everyone deserves love and support. We work tirelessly to provide our participants with the resources and support they need to achieve their full potential. With our help, they can become leaders in their families, communities, and beyond.
Our goal is to create a world where all formerly incarcerated individuals have the opportunity to succeed, no matter their background or history. Join us in our mission to help our participants lead the way.
Mentorship plays a critical role in our participants’ personal and professional development. Our mentors come from diverse backgrounds and industries, providing our participants with a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from.
Through one-on-one sessions, group meetings, and workshops, our mentors provide guidance, support, and encouragement to help our participants achieve their goals.
Mentorship also helps our participants build lasting relationships and networks, connecting them with people who can provide career opportunities and support as they navigate their professional journeys.
The value of mentorship cannot be overstated: It gives our participants a sense of belonging, a voice, and a path forward.
Entrepreneurship is another key component of our programs. By teaching participants the skills and knowledge necessary to start and run their own businesses, we provide them with the means to achieve financial independence and stability. Our entrepreneurship program covers everything from market research and product development to financial planning and business management.
The value of entrepreneurship is clear: it empowers our participants to take control of their financial futures and create a better life for themselves and their families. It gives them the confidence to take risks and pursue their passions, helping them to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
At Angel’s Safe Home, we are committed to helping our participants become leaders in every aspect of their lives. Our mentorship and entrepreneurship programs are integral to this goal, providing them with the skills, support, and confidence they need to succeed.
The gender-specific reentry model developed by A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL) is loving and nonjudgmental. It is a program established and designed by formerly incarcerated women for formerly incarcerated women. At Angel’s Safe Home, which replicates the ANWOL model, women lead their own lives, make their own decisions, and agree to be held accountable for their actions. We support women in setting goals and then support them in making progress toward those goals.
We measure success using the same 12 benchmarks A New Way of Life has found necessary for successful reentry: housing stability, accessing personal ID, the maintenance of sobriety, development of self-identified goals, compliance with conditions of probation/parole, progress toward achieving self-identified goals, the ability to access eligible assistance and benefits, access to and continuation of physical/mental health services, enrollment in school and/or ability to access employment, regular attendance at recovery meetings, participation in onsite programming, and no reincarceration.

See the tabs…It really is a process.
At Angel’s Safe Home, we follow a proven process developed by A New Way of Life Reentry Project, and we utilize the best resources available. Our approach is guided by the following steps…
At Angel’s Safe Home, our first step is to assess each participant’s needs and goals. This involves understanding their personal and professional aspirations, as well as any challenges they may be facing.
This assessment helps us tailor our programs and support to each participant’s specific needs, ensuring that they receive the most effective and impactful support possible. Our assessment process is designed to be thorough, comprehensive, and respectful, taking into account each participant’s unique background, skills, and experiences.
Our program is designed to empower our participants to take control of their financial futures and create a better life for themselves and their families. Our program covers everything from market research and product development to financial planning and business management, teaching participants the skills and knowledge they need to start and run their own successful businesses.
The value of entrepreneurship is clear: It gives our participants the confidence to take risks and pursue their passions, helping them to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
At Angel’s Safe Home, our commitment to our participants doesn’t end when they leave our program. We continue to provide support, resources, and opportunities to help them succeed and grow as leaders in their communities.
This includes ongoing mentorship, access to entrepreneurship resources, and opportunities for professional development. Our goal is to help our participants achieve their full potential and lead successful, fulfilling lives, and we will do everything in our power to support them on their journey.

Angela Burrell
Founder/President
I just wanted my life circumstances to be different. I needed help and support.
A New Way of Life allowed me to be there with support and a chance to heal from incarceration. After discharging parole and moving back to Amarillo Texas I could see the need for a safe Home.
In 2020 after consulting with Ms. Burton, the founder of a New Way of Life and observing the need in Amarillo, I decided to start a Safe Home here in Amarillo Texas, we became a part of the Safe Housing Network, created by A New Way of Life and dedicated to supporting the replication and its nationally acclaimed reentry model. We believe every person is worthy, deserving respect, and that personal transformation and systemic change go hand in hand.
